Job Opening: Linux/UNIX System Administrator

Job Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to design, deploy, operate and maintain Merced’s internal and customer hosted Linux/UNIX server infrastructure, while also resolving customer issues that require direct access to the Linux/UNIX server infrastructure, and acting in an appropriate professional working style.


Required Skills

  1. Demonstrated ability to install and deploy Red Hat Linux, HP-UX, and other UNIX version servers and supported application software needed to support server capacity, performance, or product functionality requirements.
  2. Experience implementing and supporting a production multi-tenant architecture
  3. Experience providing 24x7 support to production Software as a Service infrastructure, including understanding of on-call responsibilities and procedures.
  4. 4 years of experience installing, managing, and supporting Red Hat Linux/UNIX OS software and servers.
  5. Experience installing, managing, and supporting production Java-based applications, Apache web servers, and Tomcat application software running on Linux/UNIX.
  6. Demonstrated ability to prepare, review, test, and execute scripts to perform Linux/UNIX server administrative tasks as assigned.
  7. Ability to act as part of Merced Technical Operations team, continuously sharing information and assisting on tasks with other team members.
  8. Ability to provide excellent and ongoing support to other Merced departments as needed to solve customer and product issues in a timely manner.
  9. Demonstrated ability to deal directly with external customers in a friendly, supportive manner to troubleshoot and solve complex technical issues regarding Merced hosted performance, security, availability, and reliability.
  10. Four-year degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other technical discipline.


Desired Skills

  1. 2+ years experience providing 24x7 support to production enterprise infrastructures, including understanding of on-call responsibilities and procedures.
  2. Experience maintaining and operating 24x7 Application Service Provider / Software as a Service infrastructure delivering web-based applications.
  3. Proven experience with the design and testing of production Linux/UNIX server hardware and software infrastructure, including NIS, mail, monitoring, DNS, web servers, and other support systems.
  4. Experience with the following applications: Twiki, JIRA, Nagios, Ganglia, Orca


Work Environment

  1. Demonstrated ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
  2. Abililty to work in typical office environment, using standard office computer equipment.
  3. Ability to work in data center environment, standing for extended periods of time while performing maintenance duties on computer equipment.
  4. Position may be required to work at a computer terminal and desk for long periods of time on projects.
  5. Ability to lift, move, and install computer equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.
  6. Will be required to travel between main offices, co-location facility, and other Merced worldwide locations.
  7. Ability to work late evenings and weekends as required, often as part of regular on-call rotation schedule.
